Fire Resistance Testing

Through years of hands-on experience with performing fire resistance tests in accordance with many European test standards, I can assist you with the development of your testing program.

My testing experience includes the following fire resistance tests:

  • EN 1363-1 Fire resistance tests – General requirements
  • EN 1363-2 Fire resistance tests – Alternative and additional procedures
  • EN 1364-1 Fire resistance tests for non-load bearing elements – Walls
  • EN 1364-2 Fire resistance tests for non-load bearing elements – Ceilings
  • EN 1365-2 Fire resistance tests for load bearing elements – Floors and roofs
  • EN 1365-3 Fire resistance tests for load bearing elements – Beams
  • EN 1366-2 Fire resistance tests for service installations – Fire dampers
  • EN 1366-3 Fire resistance tests for service installations – Penetration seals
  • EN 1366-4 Fire resistance tests for service installations – Linear joint seals
  • EN 1366-12 Fire resistance tests for service installations – Non-mechanical fire barrier for ventilation duct work
  • EN 1634-1 Fire resistance test for door and shutter assemblies and opening windows
  • NEN 6069 Resistance to fire – Testing of building products and building elements and classification of the results (for The Netherlands)
  • SIS 02 48 20 Fire resistance tests – Elements of building construction (for Sweden)

I am familiar with many other test methods, please contact me for the possibility of assisting you with testing programs involving other building products such as curtain walls.

Reaction to Fire Testing

A reaction to fire classification is often required for the classification or certification of a fire-rated building product. Although I have not performed these tests myself, I am familiar with the requirements and can arrange for testing at accredited European testing institutes.

Other Required Testing

Depending on the desired scope of the product certification, other testing might be necessary. For instance durability, mechanical resistance, content of dangerous substances, etc. I am familiar with many of these requirements and can arrange for testing at accredited European testing institutes.

Extended Application and Classification of Test Results

In addition to testing, an expansion of tests results might be possible based on European Extended Application standards. Sometimes this is even possible without additional testing.

I can investigate what expansions are possible for specific building products, based on the the available test reports and the latest EXAP standards. If necessary, I can propose additional testing to achieve the desired goals.

Ultimately the testing & EXAP reports will result in a classification report, which is in most cases a requirement to put products on the market in the European Union, especially if CE marking is required.

An overview of the EXAP standards I have used to write reports for customers:

  • EN 15254-4 Extended application of results from fire resistance tests – Non-loadbearing walls – Glazed constructions
  • EN 15254-5 Extended application of results from fire resistance tests – Non-loadbearing walls – Metal sandwich panel construction
  • EN 15269-1 Extended application of test results for fire resistance and/or smoke control door, shutter and openable window assemblies
  • EN 15269-2 Extended application of test results for fire resistance and/or smoke control door, shutter and openable window assemblies, including their elements of building hardware – Fire resistance of hinged and pivoted steel doorsets
  • EN 15269-3 Extended application of test results for fire resistance and/or smoke control door, shutter and openable window assemblies, including their elements of building hardware – Fire resistance of hinged and pivoted timber doorsets and openable timber framed windows
  • EN 15269-5 Extended application of test results for fire resistance and/or smoke control door, shutter and openable window assemblies, including their elements of building hardware – Fire resistance of hinged and pivoted metal framed glazed doorsets and openable windows
  • EN 15269-10 Extended application of test results for fire resistance and/or smoke control door, shutter and openable window assemblies, including their elements of building hardware – Fire resistance of steel rolling shutter assemblies
  • EN 15725 Extended application reports on the fire performance of construction products and building elements
  • EN 15882-2 Extended application of results from fire resistance tests for service installations – Fire Dampers
  • EN 15882-3 Extended application of results from fire resistance tests for service installations – Penetration seals
  • EN 15882-4 Extended application of results from fire resistance tests for service installations – Linear joint seals

I am also familiar with the following EXAP standards:

  • EN 15269-20 Extended application of test results for smoke control for hinged and pivoted steel, timber and metal framed glazed doorsets
  • EN 15269-7 Extended application of test results for fire resistance for steel sliding doorsets)

Standardisation

For more than a decade, I have actively contributed to European standardization committees, shaping the evolution of standards governing fire-rated penetration seals and linear joint seals. My involvement includes pivotal roles in committees such as:

  • CEN TC 127, Working Group 2, Task Group 1: EN 1366-3 Penetration Seals
  • CEN TC 127, Working Group 2, Task Group 1: EN 1366-4 Linear Joint Seals
  • CEN TC 127, Working Group 2, Task Group 2: EN 15882-3 Extended Application results for penetration seals

I have represented manufacturers in these task groups, to ensure their interests are well represented. And I can do the same for you! To avoid a conflict of interest, I can only represent one entity at a time, please contact me to ask about availability.

For Manufacturers

Things I can do for you:

  • Initiate testing setup for new products from scratch;
  • Analyze existing test results and propose additional testing;
  • Investigate the possibilities for Extended Application of test results;
  • Take control of the classification to make sure all results are included.

For Testing Institutes

Things I can do for you:

  • Perform fire resistance tests at your institute
  • Write test reports based on testing data
  • Write EXAP and classification reports
  • Represent your testing institute at CEN
